West Marine to award $10,000 to eco-contest winner

WATSONVILLE, Calif. — West Marine will hold a “Green Product of the Year” contest that will award $10,000 to a winner at next year’s Miami International Boat Show. The contest was announced in a release just prior to the 2009 Miami Boat Show.

“One of West Marine’s goals is to be an industry leader in sustainability. Through this initiative we hope to encourage innovation and a steady stream of environmentally friendly products so our children and our children’s children will have the opportunity to enjoy plentiful oceans and beautiful blue waters, as we have,” said West Marine CEO Geoff Eisenberg.

The competition is open to individuals, manufacturers, distributors and inventors of boating products, according to the West Marine release. Judges for the competition include Randy Kochevar from Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station; Mike Sutton, VP and Director of the Center for the Future of the Oceans at Monterey Bay Aquarium; Ruth Wood, President of BoatU.S.; Chuck Husick, President of OWA, Inc.; Stan Honey, Ocean Racing Navigator and founder of Etak and SportVision; Randy Repass, West Marine’s Chairman and Founder; and Chuck Hawley, VP of Product Information for West Marine.

The winner will be selected based on the following criteria: eco-effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, applicability and breadth of market impact, degree of innovation and originality and compliance with official rules.
