New Nashville-area marinas being considered
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Army Corps of Engineers is considering permits for up to three new marinas on Old Hickory Lake, one of the Nashville area’s busiest bodies of water and the third-busiest lake operated by the Corps, according to an article yesterday in The Tennessean.
An Army Corps ecologist told the newspaper that the 11 marinas currently located on the lake, which offer about 1,500 boat slips, are unable to meet demand, given the growth in many lake-side communities. No new marinas have been constructed on Old Hickory Lake or its neighboring J. Percy Priest Lake, in at least 20 years, according to the newspaper.
Three sites have been chosen, out of the six proposals submitted last year, as potential finalists to receive a new marina. The newspaper reported that the Corps may decide to permit all three or none of them, but if a plan is approved, it will take at least a year for any marina project to open to the public. An environmental impact assessment is currently underway, which includes public comment periods.
