Brunswick lays off 70 employees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Brunswick Corp. has laid off 70 hourly and salaried workers at its Edgewater, Fla. boat plants, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported in a story on its Web site Friday.

The jobs were at Boston Whaler and Brunswick Commercial and Government Products, which employed nearly 500 workers between them before the layoffs.

“The reductions, unfortunately, were necessary as we deal with a continuing challenging U.S. marine market,” the newspaper quoted Brunswick spokesman Dan Kubera as saying in an e-mail. “We will offer assistance in helping those affected employees transition to other employment.”

Brunswick has closed several boat plants and cut more than 1,000 jobs throughout the country. Except for a summer furlough, though, the cuts had not affected its plants in Florida’s Volusia and Flagler counties until now, the newspaper reported.
