Viking workforce cut 17 percent since March

BASS RIVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Viking Yachts has laid off up to 17 percent of its work force, or up to 250 positions, since March, Newsday reported in a story today.

The yacht builder, based in Bass River Township, N.J., says it was hit earlier this year by higher fuel costs. The weakened world economy also has reduced demand for sport fishing and motor yachts that cost from $1 million to $4.5 million, the newspaper reported.

Communications director Peter Frederiksen says some of the workers are furloughed and will be brought back when work jobs pick up, according to the story.
