Despite layoffs, Fountain hopeful worst is over

WASHINGTON, N.C. – Boat builder Fountain Powerboats has laid off 70 workers at its Beaufort County plant as a cost cutting measure, resulting in a total of 270 workers, according to an article today in The News & Observer.

However, company executives suggested recent improvement in gas prices and interest rates make them hopeful the market will soon rebound.

“We’re anticipating that this is just a blip and that in the very near future we’ll be calling all these people back,” Carol Price, vice president of human resources, told the newspaper.
