Moffatt & Nichol completes 700-slip marina design

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Moffatt & Nichol has completed the design for Cabrillo Way Marina in San Pedro, Calif., for the Port of Los Angeles (POLA), it reported in a recent statement.

The goal of the project is to provide a vibrant village atmosphere for recreation marine and boating activities that brings together tourists, boaters, local and regional residents as well as to increase opportunities for area businesses, the design firm reported.

The project design reflects “the latest in green technologies with minimal impact on the environment” and supports POLA’s Clean Marina initiative, the company stated.

The design calls for dredging and landfill to re-shape the basin to create a more efficient layout and an increase in slips, according to Moffat & Nichol. The new marina will have 700 wet slips, including 10 slips to accommodate vessels 100 feet and above.

The new concrete floating docks will have power, water and communication connections for phone, e-mail and cable television. The electrical power supply is designed to meet the demands of larger craft and sewage disposal facilities will be provided at designated docks, according to the company. At the south end of the facility, 400 dry berth spaces will be created to accommodate smaller sail and power boats. Four cranes will be installed for boat launch and haul-out.

The design of the shore facilities included a 4,000 foot granite inlayed promenade, grading, security, utilities, signage, site furnishings and building pads. The design also called for access roads to be installed to service the marina and future outer harbor development. Site plans allow for more than 1,400 parking spaces, the company reported.
