Cobia plans to shut down N.C. facility

MARION, N.C. – A N.C. plant that manufactures Cobia-brand boats, which is owned by Maverick Boats Co., is closing its doors at the end of August, laying off the 68 employees working there, The News & Observer reported in an article last week.

Maverick Boats President Scott Deal stated in a letter to the N.C. Dept. of Commerce that he intends to reopen the plant when the market recovers, according to the newspaper.

Deal explained that the boat market “collapsed” in June during the height of most boat dealers’ business and as a result, dealers weren’t placing new orders.
