Crownline to lay off 133 employees

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. – Crownline Boats will be laying off 133 employees following its annual summer vacation, July 21 to Aug. 10, The Southern reported in an article on Wednesday.

West Frankfort Finance Commissioner Chris McPhail told the newspaper that the boat builder – the city’s biggest employer – sent out letters to employees and city hall regarding the layoffs on Friday.

Crownline has held summer-time layoffs in the past, according to the article. In fact, it laid off 145 workers in July 2005. But this time, the layoffs may not be temporary.

“They laid off the 133 and mentioned in the letter that due to unforeseeable changes in the economy, for the immediate future, they didn’t see themselves bringing the employees back,” McPhail told the newspaper. “So, basically it is a permanent layoff.”
