Fractional sailing growing in popularity

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The increasing popularity of fractional sailing has driven the SailTime Group LLC’s addition of new bases across the U.S. and Europe over the past several years, representing a significant expansion in membership and franchise locations, it reported in a statement yesterday.

“Fractional sailing has not only helped to introduce new people to sailing,” noted Jonathan Banks, executive director of Sail America. “It has also helped stimulate growth in the overall industry.”

The company said it now has nearly 1,000 fractional sailing members and more than 50 locations worldwide.

“The concept of fractional sailing, which SailTime pioneered in 2001, has helped both novice and experienced sailors enjoy sailing without the hassle, cost and complexities of owning, docking, insuring and maintaining their own boat,” said Wayne Diviney, CEO and president of SailTime. “This novel concept is literally changing the way people sail, and helping introduce thousands of new sailors to the sport and recreation of boating at a fraction of the cost of ownership.”

Since 2005, 16 new SailTime bases have opened up in the U.S. and 10 in Europe. New base locations include: Cocoa Beach, Fla.; Long Island, N.Y.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Charleston, S.C.; Marina Del Ray, Calif.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Cambridge, Md.; Atlanta, Ga.; Virginia Beach, Va.; Baltimore, Md.; Chicago, Ill.; Detroit, Mich.; Southport, N.C.; North Jersey, N.J.; Dallas, Texas; and Puerto Rico. In Europe, new bases have opened in Falmouth, Ipswich, Plymouth, Lymington, Chichester, Medway and Poole in the U.K.; Dublin in Ireland; and Lelystad and Wemeldinge in the Netherlands.
