FLIBS site to be redeveloped?

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A new $500 million proposal to redevelop the Bahia Mar, site of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, was designed specifically so that it might continue to host the show, according to an article yesterday in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“I would never have developed this plan but for the boat show,” LXR Vice President Peter J. Henn told the newspaper.

LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels submitted the plan to the city yesterday, the newspaper reported. A public workshop scheduled for Tuesday will serve as the first detailed public presentation of the company’s plans, it suggested.

Not only would the site feature a Waldorf-Astoria hotel, luxury condos and shops, two waterside restaurants, and a 20-foot parking garage under LXR’s plans, it would also include a four-acre waterside park that would be filled with exhibition tents during the show, as would the site’s new parking area, according to the newspaper. In fact, if approved, developers plan to build in the necessary wiring, ductwork and other infrastructure for the show during construction, it added.

Currently, the city owns the Bahia Mar Beach Report and Yachting Center and leases it to LXR, the newspaper explained. Under its plan, LXR wants the city to extend that lease, which will be up in 2062, by 45 years.
