IBEX Mentoring Program kicks off

BROOKLIN, Maine – The IBEX Mentoring Program had its inaugural reception Oct. 9, the evening before IBEX, organizers said in a statement yesterday.

Frank Herhold, Marine Industry Association of South Florida president, made a brief presentation at the beginning of the program, drawing from that group's “Navigate Your Career” DVD.

To date, 58 experienced marine professionals have volunteered their services to assist those new to the industry and 46 mentees have joined the program, according to organizers. It has been set up as a year-round program.

And organizers are encouraging more mentors and mentees to join the program. There is no cost to participate, thanks to the assistance of sponsors Alcan Baltek Corp., Dometic Corp., Interlux Yacht Finishes, National Marine Manufacturers Association and Professional BoatBuilder Magazine.

“We are in need of some more mentors to assist new people in the business of running boat building companies, boat yards, all facets in our industry,” said Carl Cramer, program organizer.

A Web page dedicated to the program is being established within the IBEX Web site. An electronic bulletin board is also in the works so all participants can communicate with each other.

“There are so many of us who were helped early on in our fledgling careers by experienced professionals,” Cramer said. “Our industry is much more complex today, but the IBEX Mentoring Program may be one way we can continue to encourage and educate new people to navigate their ways to success.”
