USCG Commandant to address BWI audience
WILMETTE, Ill. – U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen will address attendees at the Boating Writers International annual meeting during the Miami Boat Show, BWI said in a recent release.
Allen, who has the responsibility to prepare for the possibility of a terrorist attack from a small boat, and who has publicly floated the idea that recreational boaters should obtain an automobile-type license as a security measure, became a national figure in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
He was quoted by Reuters last summer as saying, “We haven’t put nearly as much thinking in science and technology and general thought into the small vessel threat as we need to and I think that’s where we need to go next.”
Allen is scheduled to speak on Friday, Feb. 16 at the annual BWI membership meeting. The event is open to the marine community and requires no ticket for admission.
At the same meeting, 45 top marine stories of 2006 and their authors will be recognized in an annual writing contest conducted by the BWI membership, with $15,000 in awards presented to first ($500), second ($300) and third ($200) place scorers in 15 writing categories. Recipients also take home a recognition plaque noting their “excellence in creating compelling stories about the boating lifestyle through entertaining, educational and inspiring journalism.”
