Seattle show scheduled around sports team
SEATTLE – The 2007 Seattle Boat Show is set to open Thursday, January 25, two weeks later than usual, and close on Saturday, February 3, organizers reported in a recent statement. The Thursday opening is new for the Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), producers of the event which first began in 1947.
In an effort to avoid potential scheduling conflicts at Qwest Field with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, NMTA’s Board of Trustees elected to move the show’s opening and to open on a Thursday instead of a Friday. The 10-day event opens Thursday and closes Saturday, February 3 to allow for the 300,000 square feet of boat exhibits to move out in time for another event already scheduled in the building to move in. Super Bowl XLI is set for Sunday, February 4.
“These dates give us the best opportunity to stage the largest boat show on the West Coast,” said Michael Campbell, NMTA president. “By closing on Saturday night, boaters will be home to watch the Seahawks play in their second straight Superbowl on Sunday.”
Attendance dropped 21 percent at the January 2006 event when it was forced to close two days earlier than scheduled to accommodate a Seahawks home playoff game. Daily attendance figures were at a record high pace before the event closed on Friday at 6 p.m. – erasing second weekend attendance figures from the final tally, organizers explained.
