Clean Marina honors given to three N.J. locations
SANDY HOOK, N.J. – The New Jersey Clean Marina Program recently designated Main One Marina, Baywood Marina and Dillon’s Creek Marina as “Clean Marina” facilities, bringing the total number of the state’s Clean Marinas to five, the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium reported in a recent release.
Main One Marina is located on the Shark River in Avon-by-the-Sea, and is owned by Adelaide Franklin. It was among the first marinas in the state to capture and recycle wash water from pressure washing the bottom of boats and also takes steps to reduce stormwater runoff into the adjacent waters.
Baywood Marina, located on Barnegat Bay in Brick, has posted fuel and fire response plans, installed a slip side pumpout system, rented dustless sanders and posted marina regulations around the facility. The business also offers spill pads for customers to use while fueling and in their boats to collect small spills and drips.
Dillon’s Creek Marina in Island Heights lies on a protected area just off Toms River. It has minimized the need for bulkhead by utilizing the shoreline and native plants and constructed a service building where all maintenance on boats can be performed undercover.
“For over 17 years I have been observing best management practices to protect the marine environment, and this program is a great tool to encourage other marinas to do the same,” says Brian Hall, manager of Dillon’s Creek Marina.
The NJ Clean Marina Program is a voluntary education program that provides information, guidance and technical assistance to marina operators, local governments and recreational boaters regarding the most effective practices to protect water quality and coastal resources.
