Publicity rights lawsuit against megayacht builder settled
WASHINGTON – Tiger Woods has settled his rights-of-publicity lawsuit against megayacht builder Christensen Shipyards, the golfer’s law firm, Venable LLP, reported in a statement yesterday.
While the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, the Boston Herald reported in an article Friday that the yacht builder’s insurance firm, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. of Minnesota, has filed its own lawsuit in federal court contending that Christensen Shipyards Ltd. agreed to the $1.6 million settlement without its approval.
St. Paul wants the settlement with Woods to be paid entirely by Christensen, but said at the very least, its share should be limited to the $1 million cap cited in its policy with Christensen, according to the newspaper.
Woods and his wife filed suit against the yacht builder in October 2004, claiming the company violated their contract by improperly using their names and images and that of their yacht in various promotions.
The statement from Woods’ attorneys quoted Christensen President Joe Foggia as stating, “We made a mistake and truly regret the company’s conduct.”
