Boat inventories up, sales down for Spader dealers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Boat inventories were up and boat sales were down for the average dealer tracked by Spader Cos. during the one month ended Jan. 31, 2006 compared to 2005, the company reported in a recent statement. However, gross margins were also up.

The training and consulting firm tracks North American boat dealers, both large and small, to compile an average profile, then compares year-over-year trends in a number of different categories.

While new boat inventories were up 14.9 percent to $3,660,503, compared to the previous year, new boat sales were down 2 percent to $267,497.

The average dealer’s used boat inventories were up 6.3 percent to $323,646, while used boat sales were down 14.1 percent to $62,463.

Total dealership sales were up 1.9 percent from $377,523 to $384,588 – due largely to increases in marina and service revenue – for the average dealer during the month ended Jan. 31 compared to the same period of 2005, reported Spader.

Spader Cos. said its average marine dealer reported a net loss of $43,739 or 11.4 percent of sales, up 3.5 percent compared to a net loss of $42,251 or 11.2 percent of sales in January 2005.

The unit gross margin percentage was up 0.9 points from 17.1 percent in 2005 to 18.0 percent this year, while total company gross margin percentage was up 2.5 points to 33.4 percent.

Spending was up in terms of dollars.
