Grant may help Maine grow its boating industry

BANGOR, Maine – A $15-million federal economic development grant Maine has received is expected to help the state grow its boat building capacity, according to a recent article in the Bangor Daily News.

Provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, the grant funds the North Star Alliance, which includes businesses, research and development facilities, universities and state government, according to the newspaper.

“Its purpose is to expand composite-related industries in areas such as marine and waterfront infrastructure, boat building and construction and a range of other products,” the article stated.

The $15-million will be spread over three years. The article didn’t mention whether the monies will be used to support the Maine Boat Building Alliance, an effort launched last year to help raise the international profile of Maine as a boatbuilding center.
