New study supports boat builder certification
CHICAGO – A recent study conducted by the National Marine Manufacturers Association suggested that NMMA Certified boats are seven times less likely to be recalled than non-certified boats, the association reported in a statement today.
Using data from the U.S. Coast Guard Factory Visit Program in 2001, the study examined the relationship between certification and recalls and what, if any, effect NMMA certification has on the probability of experiencing a USCG recall.
“The bottom line is that the likelihood of a U.S. Coast Guard recall is dramatically reduced if a boat manufacturer becomes NMMA Certified,” says Tom Marhevko, NMMA vice president of engineering standards.
In 2001, the 1,092 USCG Factory Visit Program inspections resulted in 207 recalls issued to 86 manufacturers listed in the USCG Manufacturers Identification Code Database. Of those 86 manufacturers, 83 were uncertified in 2001 and 3 were certified.
“In reviewing recall data, 204 of the 207 recalls were issued to manufacturers of uncertified boats, and three of the recalls were issued to manufacturers of certified boats,” explained Marhevko, adding that the study results are “a powerful endorsement for NMMA Certification.”
