Mercury to lay off outboard assembly workers
FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Mercury Marine will lay off 68 employees from its Fond du Lac outboard manufacturing plant next week as part of its continuing effort to aggressively manage field inventory, the company reported in a statement today.
The affected employees work in Mercury’s Plant 15, the company’s outboard assembly facility. Employees hired during the past two years were advised prior to their hiring that layoffs were a possibility, according to the company.
January 27 will be the final work day for those included in the layoff. No other layoffs are anticipated.
Mercury said it constantly manages its product inventories to safeguard the health of its dealer network and to maintain expected levels of profitability.
“Anytime you have to reduce your workforce it’s difficult,” said Patrick C. Mackey, president of Mercury Marine. “These are good people – people we’ve relied upon to get the job done. Regrettably, there are times the health of a company demands difficult decisions, and that is the case today.”
Despite this news, company spokesman Steve Fleming said in an interview today that the company still feels good about the coming year.
Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corp., employs about 6,400 people worldwide, approximately 3,200 of which work at the Fond du Lac site.
