Asian boat builder grows its U.S. market share

SEATTLE – Alexander Marine, the manufacturer of the Ocean Alexander yachts, has substantially increased its share of the West Coast market, according to a recent statement from the company.

The US Customs data from Jan. 1, 2005 to Sept. 30, 2005 shows Alexander Marine as the premier importer of luxury yachts into the West Coast ports, leading the pack with 23 percent of all imports for the West Coast, Alexander Marine stated. That compares to 12 percent in 2003 and 15 percent in 2004.

The company attributed the significant increase in part to the successful introduction of Ocean Alexander’s new range of 70-foot-plus yachts.

“Although, we do not build custom yachts, our goal is to build the finest quality semi-custom yachts in the market today and in the future,” said Tom Waugh, general sales manager for Ocean Alexander Marine Yachts Sales in Seattle.

Ocean Alexander’s current 2006 order book for the West Coast gives the expectation for another year of double digit revenue gains with further increases of the market share, according to the company.

Alexander Marine, a family owned and operated boat manufacturer, currently builds the Ocean Alexander and Classicco models. Its two current factories are located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and Shanghai, China. Since the late 1970’s, Alexander Marine has built over 2000 boats, ranging from 45 feet in length to the newly introduced 98-foot model.
