New 231-slip marina planned in S.C.

VANCE, S.C. – A Charleston area couple will develop a 231-slip marina on Lake Marion in Vance, S.C., bringing new jobs and a $3.5 million investment to the small town, Orangeburg, S.C.’s Times and Democrat reported Sunday.

Beverly and Bill Detyens told the newspaper their new Marker 79 Marina and Yacht Club will represent a capital investment of approximately $3.5 million over a three-year period and will bring 12 to 15 new jobs to Vance.

The marina is proposed for vessels larger than those that had previously been seen on the lake. It will include dry stacking and rolling storage as well as a 300-passenger cruise vessel.

Bill Detyens told the newspaper he was overwhelmed by the response to the decision to build the Marker 79 Marina and Yacht Club in Vance.

“This area is a virtual playground,” Detyens said. “We anticipate having yachts in the 40- to 70-foot range as well as a dinner cruise boat and water skiing.”

Orangeburg County Council Chairman John Rickenbacker touted the announcement as coinciding well with the county’s focus on economic development as a “number one priority.”
