Large marina approved in Stockton, Calif.
STOCKTON, Calif. — The city of Stockton, Calif., will design a downtown marina that could dock more than 180 boats and cost more than $20 million, the Stockton City Council decided earlier this week, according to a story on www.recordnet.com.
The council voted to spend $1 million on the marina’s design and signals a preliminary embrace of a project that has been on planners’ minds since 1995, according to the story.
According to the deal approved Tuesday, San Mateo-based Callander Associates Landscape Architects Inc. is to design a marina that could include 186 berths and a promenade on the south bank of the Stockton Deep Water Channel. The project also could include additional docks on the north bank, where boaters could tie up adjacent to Stockton Ballpark, Stockton Arena and an eventual Sheraton Hotel.
The south shore complex, which could cost $17 million to $18 million, would span the waterfront from Weber Point to Mormon Slough. It could open in 2007 or 2008, city officials said. The entire project could cost more than $20 million, but the exact scope of the marina and its cost to taxpayers remained undecided. The city has secured low-interest state loans worth $13.3 million, according to the report.
The city’s latest marina designs include fewer but bigger berths than a 298-berth facility the city once envisioned. The marina could include space for boat rentals and tour boats. City leaders have said the marina is central to Stockton’s aim to draw people and their money to downtown movies, sports events and restaurants, according to the story.
