Impact of Miami show exceeds $800 million

FORT MYERS – A just-released analysis has put the economic impact of the 2005 Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail Miami at $817.8 million, the South Florida Business Journal reported in a recent story.

That dollar amount reflects gross sales and wages throughout Florida, the newspaper reported.

Prepared by Tampa-based Thomas J. Murray & Associates with the University of Florida, the study assessed the economic impact of the five-day show on Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, as well as the state.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association said its show supports 9,030 full-time jobs.

The 64th Miami International Boat Show and 20th Strictly Sail Miami took place Feb. 17-21 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center and Miamarina at Bayside Marketplace.

The Business Journal also reported several other findings of the 2005 study which estimated that:

  • Show sales for Florida companies were $428.4 million, including about $231.3 million in sales from companies based in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
  • $41.6 million in total excise and sales tax was generated in Florida.
  • There were 145,355 visitors, of which 41 percent were from out of state. Those visitors, the study estimated, spent $64.6 million on travel-related goods and services during the show’s five-day run.
  • Out-of-state exhibitors spent $12.9 million on travel-related goods and services.
  • The 65th edition of the Miami International Boat Show and 21st Strictly Sail is set for Feb. 16-20, 2006, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Sea Isle Marina & Yachting Center and Miamarina at Bayside.
