Saga Marine relocates production to California
ST. CATHARINES, Ontario – Canadian boat manufacturer Saga Marine has reached an agreement with Pacific Seacraft of Fullerton, Calif., to build Saga’s models in California, the companies reported in a recent release.
The relocation of production has occurred as a result of both the rising strength of the Canadian dollar (up over 30 percent in the last two years) and the desire of Pacific Seacraft to expand its business, building offshore sailboats, according to the release.
“The increasing value of the Canadian dollar seriously affected the revenue and was starting to erode margins,” said Allan Poole, president of Saga. “Like many Southern Ontario manufacturers, we have had to seek alternative sources. This move allows us to continue providing a high quality product at a good value price.”
Geoff Emery, president of Pacific Seacraft, said, “We know how to build a boat of Saga’s quality, which mirrors what we’ve been doing for years. This is a great fit for both companies.”
Although both lines of boats are aimed at the blue water market, they cater to two different types of sailors. Both brands will be supported with a new customer service department in California.
Pacific Seacraft, which has been building yachts for nearly 30 years. In addition to the cruising auxiliaries carrying its own name, the company has also built the Nordhavn 40 trawler.
