Proposal for $20-million marina moves forward
KENNER, La. – Long-awaited plans to build a $20 million marina on Lake Pontchartrain Kenner, La., have taken a step forward, with a recommendation from the city’s Zoning Commission to create a marina zoning district for the lakefront property, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported in an online story today.
The new zoning district still needs the approval of the Kenner City Council, which is likely to discuss it at its second meeting in July, the newspaper reported.
A marina has been in the plans of the developers of Gabriel, a gated subdivision in the town, since before the first lots were sold in 2000, according to the Times-Picayune.
Under the zoning commission recommendation, the area that would be rezoned for the marina complex, including currently dry land and reclaimable lake bottom, is 28.46 acres. The marina proposal includes 330 boat slips, 40 boathouses, a yacht club and luxury hotel, the newspaper reported.
Building the marina and filling in the land could cost $20 million, while the whole complex, with a hotel, restaurants and shops, could cost $100 million or more. In its recommendation, the commission acknowledged that public access to the property must be created.
