Md. approves development of Chesapeake site
STEVENSVILLE, Md. – The state of Maryland granted final approval on waterfront access that will allow the full development of a 17-acre maritime center on Chesapeake Bay, officials reported in a recent press release.
The approval completes a four-year effort to revitalize a site on Kent Island. The Matapeake Maritime Center will be a micro-cluster of marine related business offering boating services and supplies.
Warehouse Creek Yacht Sales, Inc., and Matapeake Marine Services, Inc. will be anchor tenants at the Center. It will also become the home of The Chesapeake Marine Trades School, as well as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police Training Academy.
The Matapeake Maritime Center is located directly east of Annapolis and approximately two miles south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, on the western side of Kent Island.
The Center will allow a service and supply facility to take care of boats up to 60 feet, to be built. Matapeake Marine Services, Inc will provide repair services to over 20 boats at one time inside its service bays. Boat repair will no longer be weather dependent. Matapeake Marine Services, Inc. will be able to store over 500 boats in its indoor storage facility.
The Center includes 438,169 square feet available for lease. Fairways,
roads, and parking spaces cover an additional 243,000 square feet. Space
will be available this winter for marine related businesses and associations
seeking office, warehouse, distribution, research, engineering, or
manufacturing space.
Construction of the initial building for Matapeake Marine Services, Inc. is expected to begin by mid-July. Construction of the first maritime trade building is planned for September 2005, with potential occupancy by first quarter 2006.
