Fontaine to testify on ESA
WASHINGTON – Monita Fontaine, National Marine Manufacturers Association vice president of government relations, will testify before the Senate Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on the need for meaningful reform of the Endangered Species Act on May 19, NMMA said in a recent release.
“The Endangered Species Act was enacted in 1973 with the promise that we can do better in the job of protecting and conserving our nation’s resident species and the ecosystems that support them,” Fontaine said. “Today, over 30 years later, I will bring that same message back to Congress-we can, and must, do better.”
In the 30-year history of the ESA, only 15 of the over 1200 species that have been listed as endangered species have seen populations recover to the point that they have been delisted, NMMA said. While NMMA enthusiastically supports the goals of the act, it recognizes that it needs to be reformed in order to be more effective in achieving its conservation goals.
Fontaine is testifying at the invitation of Chairman Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), and will be presenting the concerns of NMMA to the committee.
