ABYC renews contract with Transport Canada

EDGEWATER, Md. – The American Boat & Yacht Council has renewed a contract between ABYC and Transport Canada, the Canadian government’s transportation department, expanding Transport Canada’s existing electronic access to seven ABYC standards to provide the department with access to all ABYC Standards & Technical
Information Reports, ABYC said.

Transport Canada has regulations and standards in place to govern marine safety in Canada. Although these regulations and standards are developed by the department, they sometimes incorporate standards developed by other organizations in Canada, the U.S. and internationally, such as the ABYC standards for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of small vessels.

This contract will provide Transport Canada with direct electronic access to all ABYC standards so that marine inspectors can easily find information when verifying the compliance of Canadian vessels with applicable requirements. In addition, Transport Canada will closely monitor and examine the ABYC standards, as part of its ongoing efforts to continuously enhance marine safety in Canada, to determine if a greater number of these standards could be incorporated within Canadian regulations.

“We continuously work with Transport Canada and other organizations worldwide towards the common goal of enhancing boating safety,” Skip Burdon, ABYC president, said. “We are thrilled that Transport Canada has broadened its access and potential use of ABYC standards. My hope is that this will encourage other Canadian marine industry organizations to work with ABYC in developing standards, training, and education programs.”
