Industry hit hard by canceled Vancouver boat show
VANCOUVER, Canada – A labor dispute has caused the Canadian Marine Manufacturers Association to cancel the Vancouver International Boat Show and potentially lose hundreds of thousands of dollars, reported the Vancounver Sun in an article today.
Organizers won’t be the only ones losing money. Linda Waddell, regional manager of the show, told the newspaper that she wasn’t sure how much money would be refunded to exhibitors, which paid between $800 and $30,000 each for space on the show floor.
“We have not crunched the number yet,” she said. “But, unfortunately, the financial burden and loss is likely going to be shared by the organizers and exhibitors.”
In addition, 40 to 60 percent of exhibitors’ annual sales are often made at the show, Waddell said, estimating that about $30 million in retail sales is generated at the show each year.
An outdoor component of the show, which will be held at Vancouver’s False Creek Yacht Club beginning Wednesday, will go forward with 50 boats in display from 30 to 75 feet in length, the newspaper reported.
