Marina recovering from Hurricane Charley

PINE ISLAND, Fla. – Pineland Marina opened its boat ramp for the first time since Hurricane Charley ripped through the property, and plans to open its docks within the next 10 days, reported The News-Press in an article today.

Category 4 hurricane winds destroyed the marina on Aug. 13.

“Rebuilding has been a long, dragged out problem for us, but from now on it’s going to be moving very quickly,” Dockmaster Bill McKinney told the newspaper.

County commissioners hope the reopening of the boat ramp will help reduce overcrowding at other local boat ramps, such as that in Matlacha.

“There are lots of winter residents looking for space to launch, and it is a real problem with the lack of space,” Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes told the newspaper. “I think this will relieve a lot of boat traffic.”
