Southam Awards attract near record participation

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Entries for the 12th annual “John Southam Awards for Excellence in Sailing Communications” from journalists throughout the country are nearing record levels, Sail America said in its December newsletter.

The contest, which seeks to recognize outstanding coverage of sailing in non-sailing media, has continued to build momentum and participation among journalists in a wide variety of media categories.

A grand prize of $5,000 and a crystal award is presented for the best submission, along with a specific category winner who receives $1,000 and a certificate.

“In some competitions, the chances of winning are one in a million and you can often predict that only the larger media outlets will win,” said Scot West, Sail America executive director. “However, with the Southam Awards, we have very defined criteria and a small regional newspaper really has the same chance to take home the prize just as easily as a major network organization.”

Southam Award winners will be revealed during the Miami International Boat Show Press Breakfast Feb. 17 by Sail America Marketing Committee chair and chief judge Sally Helme.
