Clean Marine program called a success
OTTAWA, Ontario – A recently released report has hailed the Clean Marine Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program as a success, TerraChoice Environmental Marketing and the Ontario Marine Operator’s Association said in a press release today.
The report shows the majority of participants have steadily improved their environmental performance ratings resulting in almost half achieving top-level eco-ratings, the organization’s reported.
“I am encouraged to see that so many marinas have taken voluntary action to reduce their impact on the environment,” said Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of the Environment. “I want to thank these organizations for showing leadership to reduce the risk to our waters and the health of our communities.”
The Clean Marine Green Leaf marinas are assessed the first and every third year thereafter by a commissioned professional auditor, who performs a thorough audit of each marina before awarding the Green Leaf Anchor rating. The marina is awarded a Green Leaf Anchor rating from one to five – one for the basic commitment, two through four for increasing amounts of eco-efficiency practices, and five for showing true leadership.
“The OMOA is very proud of the manner in which our members have adopted this program,” said Bob Eaton, director of Environmental Services for OMOA. “We expected some improvement when the first group was reassessed in 2004, but to show this kind of improvement and to have seven Five Green Leaf Anchor facilities is an amazing accomplishment.
“We saw six of the 2001 re-assessed achieve Five Green Leaf Anchors, as well as a 2002 property also achieve this leadership level. We are also appreciative of the support and positive encouragement we have received from both Environment Canada and Ontario Ministry of Environment.”
