Kellogg Marine VP wins Mel Barr award

MIAMI – Bob Staehle, a vice president and general manager for Kellogg Marine, was presented the Mel Barr award during the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s Industry Awards breakfast this morning at the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition and Conference in Miami.

Chris Byal, president of the National Marine Representatives Association, and Liz Walz, executive editor of Boating Industry magazine, presented Staehle with the award, which is named in honor of Mel Barr, a manufacturer’s rep in the northwest during the ’50s and ’60s and one of NMRA’s founders.

The Mel Barr award is voted on by NMRA member reps and presented by Boating Industry magazine.

Bob Staehle was chosen as this year’s winner for his role in keeping the marine dealer competitive with large, national chains. He was instrumental in creating programs that allowed local dealers to be competitive with large, national retail chains. Because of his work, many dealers have survived the pressure and now flourish in their businesses.

Staehle has also been involved in many industry associations. He’s served on the Connecticut Marine Trades board of directors and as president of the National Marine Distributors Association.

“I challenge the next generation to keep this industry strong for the future,” Staehle said during his acceptance speech.
