Maine marina earns Clean Marina status
PORTLAND, Maine – Panther Run Marina in Raymond, Maine, is the first lakefront boatyard/marina to be awarded Clean Marina status under the recently expanded Maine Clean Boatyards & Marinas Program, according to a recent press release from the Maine Marine Trade Association.
The purpose of the program, which started as a pilot project in Casco Bay, is to curb non-point source pollution resulting from stormwater runoff, boat maintenance, fueling activities, waste storage and disposal and sewage, the MMTA said.
In addition to demonstrating a high level of compliance in each of the five program areas, to qualify as a Maine Clean Boatyard & Marina, Panther Run Marina also had to prove its efforts to prevent the introduction of invasive species into Sebago Lake.
During the award presentation, it was noted that the company had been working diligently on making improvements to its facility and in training employees to meet and/or exceed environmental standards, according to the MMTA.
Participation in the Maine Clean Boatyards & Marinas Program is voluntary, with participating companies signing a pledge, completing a self-assessment, then inviting a verification team to inspect the facility.
“The willingness of Portland Water District to work with us to deliver this program to Sebago Lake marinas has allowed us to expand this program much quicker than we had anticipated,” said Susan Swanton, executive director of the Maine Marine Trade Association. “Their specific knowledge and experience with fresh water issues has proved to be a great help in dealing with our inland marinas.”
