West Marine’s grand opening benefits charities

SAN DIEGO – Boating retailer West Marine, Inc. recently donated more than $45,000 to two local charities – Challenged America and the United Anglers’ Friends of Rollo program – to help celebrate the grand opening of its flagship store in San Diego, the company reported recently.

Billed as the world’s largest boating supply store, the San Diego location opened the weekend of June 19, kicking off its celebration with a charity event for Friends of Rollo, a kids fishing program that introduces children to marine life and the ocean environment, West Marine said in its press release.

On Saturday, June 19, five percent of the day’s total sales benefited Challenged America, a San Diego-based free therapeutic sailing program for kids and adults with disabilities.

“More than $20,000 was raised on Friday evening, enabling United Anglers to continue the Friends of Rollo program,” said Tom Raftican, president, United Anglers of Southern California. ”We couldn’t ask for a better partner – we are ecstatic and yet grateful, to West Marine, for its continuing support.”

”Continued support from corporate partners like West Marine ensures that thousands of disabled and non-disabled sailors are provided free, year-round, therapeutic sailing instruction and educational opportunities,” said Urban Miyares, founder, Challenged America. “On behalf of everyone at Challenged America, we thank West Marine for its support and we are thrilled to continue this partnership in the near future.”
