Boat sales downturn not cause for concern

MIAMI – Info-Link’s May Bellwether Report, an examination of retail registration data in select major-boating states, shows boat sales were down for the month, compared to last year.

However, on a 12-month rolling average, boat sales up approximately 5 percent for all major boating segments except personal watercraft and stern drives, the company reported in a press release yesterday.

“Despite the apparent downturn in the May year-over-year sales growth, we do not consider this a cause for concern,” said Jesse Wells, the company’s director of Sales & Marketing. “Sales in the early part of 2004 were flying high relative to the same period last year, in part because of weaker demand during the Iraq War last year. The long-term trend is still very encouraging.”
