Big crowds expected at IYRS gala

NEWPORT, R.I. – Organizers of the International Yacht Restoration School summer gala and auction, held to benefit the Newport school and center for maritime preservation and restoration, are bracing for a large crowd at their annual fundraiser, IYRS reported in a recent press release.

The IYRS fundraiser, to be held July 16, will again mark the endpoint for the annual Classic Yacht Cruise. After stops at Fishers Island, Gardiner’s Bay, Orient Point, and Block Island, this fleet of classic boats will sail to Newport to conclude their cruise at the IYRS gala. Cruisers stepping off their boats and heading to the fundraiser will comprise about one-third of the party crowd, IYRS said.

A live and silent auction will be held during the gala by Christie’s. Many of the items are day sails or vacation charters on famous classic yachts, including a day cruise on the 1949 Sparkman & Stephens wooden yawl Bolero, and a one-week cruise in the Caribbean onboard the luxurious 360-foot Sea Cloud.

Proceeds from the event will support the work of IYRS, which runs an accredited two-year program in classic yacht restoration that draws students from around the world. IYRS also undertakes major yacht restorations that more advanced students become involved with.
