Sea-Tow franchisees sponsor PFD loaner program
SOUTHOLD, N.Y. & PORTLAND, Maine – Maine-based Sea Tow franchisees have joined with local businesses to launch a children’s life jacket loaner program at public-access docks this Fourth of July weekend, Sea Tow said in a release today.
The program was created in response to the drowning of a 2-year-old boy, and subsequent concerns regarding children’s safety on floating docks along Midcoast Maine’s coastal waterfront, Sea Tow said.
In cooperation with Hamilton Marine, Sea Tow Portland and Sea Tow Midcoast Maine have purchased 250 child-sized life jackets and are placing them on well-marked racks at gangways leading to floating docks throughout the Portland and Midcoast area. Other local businesses, including Portland Plastic Pipe, Poole Brothers Lumber, and Express Copy have also offered discounts on materials used in the program, according to the company.
“The success of this program will depend in part on the honor system,” said Captains Bill Creighton and Jon Radtke, owners of Sea Tow Midcoast Maine and Sea Tow Portland. “We are confident that people will return the Personal Floatation Devices to the racks when they come off the floats so that the next child can use them. Our goal is to protect children from avoidable accidents.”
