Ontario marina becomes first to offer biodiesel fuel

PENETANGUISHENE, Ontario – Hindson Marine, a family-run business on Georgian Bay, will become the first marina in Ontario to offer biodiesel fuel as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels this Wednesday, according to a release yesterday from the Ontario Marine Operators Association.

“The Biodiesel pumps will be in place and ready for service by Canada Day” said Justin Hindson, the marina’s owner and operator. “We will offer two grades of Biodiesel: B100 which is 100-percent bio-diesel, non-toxic product that will not kill fish; And B20, which is a mixture of 20 percent bio-diesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel. This mixture still shows a significant decrease of toxic emissions into the marine environment.”

Biodiesel is a renewable vegetable oil based fuel that can be used in any diesel engine with no modifications. It significantly reduces emissions such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and particulate matter. Biodiesel has recently been registered as a fuel and fuel additive with the Canadian Environmental Protection Agency and meets clean diesel standards established by Environment Canada, according to OMOA.
