Yacht restoration symposium to be held this September

NEWPORT, R.I. – The International Yacht Restoration School will host a Yacht Restoration Symposium Sept. 10-12 on the IYRS campus in Newport, R.I., according to an IYRS press release yesterday.

“This unique weekend event will provide invaluable information and training about yacht restoration techniques, projects and products for professional boat builders and restorers, as well as boat owners interested in learning more about the process,” said John Thommen, president of Ocean Marketing, Inc., and a trustee of IYRS.

The symposium at the federally accredited trade school will also feature presentations on the Coronet Restoration project. Coronet, a 125-foot Victorian Class Schooner, is undergoing full restoration on the IYRS campus. In addition, there will be a team boat-building event, the Sika Challenge Cup.

Not-for-profit IYRS is dedicated to the restoration of classic watercraft. Instruction is provided to over 100 students in the skills, history and related sciences needed to construct, restore and maintain yachts. Many graduates will become professional boat builders and restorers, according to the school.

IYRS said a limited number of symposium sponsorship, exhibit and seminar opportunities are available. For information, contact Dottie Meyer of Ocean Marketing, 800-343-8294 or e-mail dmeyer@oceanmark.com.
