Ontario marina is first to reach highest environmental rating
PENETANGUISHENE, Ontario – LaSalle Park Marina, located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has become the first facility to reach the highest possible Clean Marine Eco-Rating since the program officially began in January, 2001, according to a release yesterday from the Ontario Marine Operators Association.
“There are now 160 marinas and yacht clubs in Ontario in the Clean Marine Eco-Rating Program, and LaSalle Park is the first and only one to date, to reach the highest rating, ” said Bob Eaton, OMOA director of Environmental Services “To reach this goal, the facility is 93-percent compliant with audit documentation.”
The Clean Marine Eco-Rating Program tabulates environmental audit results, and facilities are scored with one to five Green Leaf Anchors. A report is then issued, and along with the continuous quality improvement prescribed in the Clean Marine Operations Handbook, each subsequent audit will result in improved performance, OMOA said.
“We are very proud of our environmental practices and policies being recognized with the Clean Marine Green Leaf leadership rating of five Green Leaf Anchors,” said John Hanson, manager of LaSalle Park Marina. “It is so reassuring to know that we really are making a difference and doing our part to ensure that there are clean, safe waterways for the community and all to enjoy now and in the future.”
Thirty additional facilities are now scheduled to join the program in 2004, bringing the total to 190 and within reach of the target of 200 for 2004, OMOA said.
