IMI executive director resigns

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tim Timpson, executive director of the International Marina Institute, resigned that position Monday as part of a plan to transfer management and administration of IMI to the Marina Operators Association of America, according to an MOAA press release today.

“I’m very happy to have played a role in leading the IMI into this productive merger and look forward to participating in the new organization as an active member of the marina industry,” said Timpson.

The two groups will merge into one international marina association in October 2004.

Timpson, who will soon launch a marina consulting company, took the helm at IMI on May 1, 2002. His primary focus was on developing and improving the educational programs at IMI, especially those in support of the Certified Marina Management (CMM) program, MOAA reported

Growth in that program was significant during Timpson’s watch, as the group increased from a little over 100 in 2002 to 160 today, according to the association.

“We would like to thank Tim Timpson for his oversight and efforts these past two years as executive director,” Gregg Kenney, IMI president and chairman, wrote in the May IMI newsletter Docklines. “While Tim will be moving on to pursue consulting opportunities in the marina industry, he will remain active in the educational and training initiatives that will be offered by the new organization.”

MOAA and IMI have executed an Association Management Agreement that set out a plan for shared management at first, then a complete merger of the two groups into a new marina association. Before the merger is completed, MOAA will manage the administration of IMI and continue to deliver the products and services that IMI members have come to expect, according to the association.

“We’ll keep the interruptions in service to a minimum as we transition the day-to-day activities of IMI into the existing MOAA operation,” said Jim Frye, MOAA executive director. “This operational relationship will give us a chance to come to know those IMI members that are not MOAA members and will allow us to be as inclusive as possible as we work cooperatively with IMI representatives to shape the new organization.”
