MIASF holds its biggest Plywood Regatta to date
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – More than $15,000 was raised for the Broward County Schools’ Marine Magnet Programs as 36 teams participated in the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) 8th Annual Plywood Regatta May 15-16, MIASF said in a release yesterday.
Teams of middle school, high school and technical school students battled quick-moving rainstorms, strong easterly winds and the clock, to build seaworthy boats from plywood, wire and caulk on Saturday, May 15, then returned the following day to race in the Hall of Fame Marina/Pro Dive Shop turning basin on the Intracoastal Waterway.
“With 36 teams participating, the 8th Annual Plywood Regatta was the biggest and most successful Plywood Regatta to date, MIASF is thrilled at the turnout and effort put forth by the students this year,” said Gordon Connell, MIASF public relations and event coordinator. “The kids, mentors, committee and staff had loads of fun, and with over $15,000 raised to benefit the Marine Magnet programs, all the students involved came out winners in the end.”
