Ohio boat dealer indicted on felony counts
PORT CLINTON, Ohio – Portage Entry Marine and Mary Lou Saliaris of Port Clinton have been indicted on more than 24 felony counts for allegedly trying to avoid paying sales taxes over an 8-year period, The Toledo Blade reported in an article today.
Among the allegations are that the business failed to issue certificates of title, tampered with records and didn’t pay state taxes on boat and engine sales between 1995 and 2003, the newspaper reported. The unpaid taxes added up to about $211,000; however, with interest and penalties, the business now owes about $325,000.
Saliaris also stands accused of forging the signature of a notary who used to work for her, according to the newspaper.
During the 8-year period, about 251 boats and engines were purchased by 120 people, none of which received proper titles or paid sales tax, the Ottawa County Prosecutor told the newspaper.
The prosecutor believes Saliaris did not turn in the manufacturer’s certificate of origin when selling a boat or engine, and therefore would register the boats without the proper title, according to the newspaper.
