Lake Powell water levels at 30-year low
LAKE POWELL, Utah – Water levels at Utah’s most popular lake are at a 30-year low and construction is underway to extend launch ramps to allow boaters water access this summer, according to a story on the KSL (TV) Web site today.
Nearly all the lake’s launch ramps are high and dry including a ramp at Hite, Utah, on the upper end of the lake, that is now miles from any useable lake water, the newspaper reported.
Although most of the lake has plenty of water for boating – it’s still 400 feet deep near the lower end – the lake must rise a little bit to get the ramps in full use, according to the report.
“The lake needs to come up a little to help us out,” said Chris Thompson of the National Park Service. “We’re doing what we can do at this end, and if it’ll meet us half way I think we’ll be in pretty good shape.”
