Clean Marina program achieving tangible results
MARARTHON, Fla. – In the first five years of Florida’s Clean Marina program, participating facilities have recycled more than 600,000 pounds of glass, 1.5 million pounds of paper, 3.7 million pounds of aluminum, 5.6 million gallons of oil and a million gallons of antifreeze, according to a story in today’s Florida Keys Keynoter.
The state of Florida has officially certified 79 Clean Marinas and 12 Clean Boatyards within 25 counties, and the program has recently been expanded to include marine retailers, the newspaper reported.
“With thousands of boaters using Florida waters every day, this public-private partnership benefits both the marine industry and the environment,” said Maury Kolchakian, assistant director of the state Department of Environmental Protection Division of Law Enforcement. “The Clean Marina Program has prevented pollution from entering Florida waters. Expanding the program helps spread the environmental message.”
The Clean Boating Partnership, which includes state and federal government agencies and the Marine Industries Association of Florida, developed the Clean Marina Program, according to the newspaper.
