Mathews appointed to Florida Boating Advisory Council
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Peggy Higdon Mathews has been appointed by Florida Governor Jeb Bush to serve on the state’s Boating Advisory Council (BAC) where she will help make recommendations on issues affecting the recreational boating community, Mathews reported in a press release yesterday.
Mathews, a resident of Tallahassee, has an extensive background in the marine environment, having worked for 15 years in state agencies on marine resource issues, and having served as the Florida representative for development of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Mathews has worked in the boating industry since 1995. She has represented marine industry organizations such as the Personal Watercraft Industry Association (PWIA), an affiliate organization of the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
“The appointment of Peggy Mathews is welcome news,” said Monita Fontaine, vice president of Government Relations for National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). “The NMMA is gratified that the governor has selected such a well-qualified and dedicated person to represent marine manufacturers.”
Mathews said she looks forward to the opportunity to assist in developing state boating policy that will preserve these recreational activities for future generations.
“Access to Florida waters is a major issue,” Mathews said. “Over 80 percent of the registered boats in Florida are trailered boats. But there is a critical shortage of boat ramps, parking and slips. Boaters should only be concerned if the fish are biting and boating safety, not finding a parking place at a launch ramp.”
