Louisiana city moves to block marina expansion

NEW ORLEANS – The Mandeville (La.) City Council asked the state Legislature Thursday to erase a loophole in its Natural and Scenic Rivers Act and bar all development on the east bank of the Tchefuncte River, the New Orleans Times Picayune reported today.

The proposed ban would stretch from near the Louisiana 22 bridge south to Lake Pontchartrain, and was allegedly prompted by rumors that owners of Marina del Ray, a large marina on the east bank of the river near the bridge, plan a major expansion, according to the story.

“We don’t want Marina del Ray to be able to dredge in the river and expand their facility along the east bank,” the story quoted Denis Bechac, council president, as having said. “We want to ensure that the entire east bank of the river from the bridge south to the lake will be forever a protected scenic river and wetlands.”
