The 27th Annual MIASF Waterway Cleanup collects 55 tons of trash
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) said nearly 3,000 volunteers participated in the 27th Annual Waterway Cleanup March 6, removing 55 tons of trash and debris from waterways, canals and shorelines in Broward County.
The MIASF press release “lauded” the efforts of the volunteers who it said were mostly from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.
“This was another successful year for the Annual Waterway Cleanup,” said Martha Lord, MIASF director of association services. “We had slightly fewer volunteers than last year, but they still collected 55 tons of trash – just three tons less than last year’s total. We can see that our community is heeding the message to be more environmentally responsible.
“The sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and our organizing committee were instrumental in the event’s success and deserve both recognition and thanks for their contributions.”
Unusual or significant discoveries from the 30 cleanup sites included a large hotel and casino neon sign found in the Intracoastal Waterway near Fort Lauderdale, along with other items such as a water heater, sofa, cappuccino machine and microwave. But the majority of the trash collected was debris items like car batteries, propane tanks and tires, MIASF said.
