TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale named Tower of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A fleet of on-the-water towing service providers wrapped up its 10th Annual Conference Thursday by naming TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale “Tower of the Year” in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 150 TowBoatU.S. and Vessel Assist towers, the company reported in a press release Friday.

Jerry Cardarelli, vice president of towing services for TowBoatU.S., said Ft. Lauderdale was chosen for its record of superior performance, high level of preparedness and leadership within the BoatU.S. Towing Services fleet.

“Their top-notch operation, which includes providing service to the Bahamas, got high marks all around,” Cardarelli said. “They are truly a role model for all of us to learn from.”

The conference was the first time both TowBoatU.S. and Vessel Assist towers met as team members – not competitors – since the purchase of Vessel Assist by BoatU.S. in September of 2003.

“Learning from each other is what this Conference is all about,” said Cardarelli, noting that the Pacific Coast Vessel Assist towers brought a new and fresh perspective into the towing program. “We hope to build on some of their ideas and learn from their operations.”

BoatU.S. supports the fleet of 100 Pacific Coast-based Vessel Assist towers with a dedicated 24-hour dispatch center in Newport Beach, Calif. The center is connected to a VHF radio tower communications network covering the busiest western ports from British Columbia to Ensenada, Mexico.

The TowBoatU.S. fleet – which includes over 400 tow boats – is located in 230 ports on the East Coast, Gulf and Great Lakes, and is serviced through the BoatU.S. 24-hour dispatch center located in Woodbridge, Virginia.
